Today’s edition of The Mailbag on Giants.com:
Why do you think Phil Simms isn't in the Hall of Fame yet and when do you think he will be?
No one is a bigger Phil Simms fan than I, and I would like to see him get enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His statistics compare favorably with many of those players already in the Hall. But I think he will never be a Hall of Famer. He has never had the support of nearly enough voters and this year he is not one of the 15 finalists. Each year he doesn’t get it, a greater number of players who excelled more recently become eligible. I don’t see how Simms is going to start getting more support 20 years after he played his last game.
I read an article about
I don’t know. If the decision-makers have decided to they want to retain Bennett, hasn’t been relayed to me. Bennett certainly did some good things in 2012 – his 55 catches and five touchdown receptions were each second on the team. It’s logical to assume that he would improve in a second season in the Giants’ offense. But I’m always skeptical when players say they’ll take less money to play for a specific team. I think that happens relatively rarely in the real world. And I wonder what his agent thought of that statement. Bennett said many times he likes playing for the Giants and would like to return. If the team feels equally strongly about him, they should be able to come to an agreement. But until one is signed, there are no guarantees.
