Eisen's Mailbag: Corey Webster at CB

Posted Dec 26, 2012

Giants.com's Michael Eisen answers your questions!

Today’s edition of The Mailbag on Giants.com.

What is the deal with Corey Webster at cornerback? He has been getting burned all year on that side of the field. Also, what the deal with David Diehl? We mentioned him in the pass, but you kind of blew us off stating that he's a good player. Eli needs protection. Fix that and we win games.
-Greg

If it were only that easy. Even Eli admitted this week that Hakeem Nicks’ lack of practice time – due to his season-long knee problems – have disrupted the timing between them. That’s just one issue Manning has battled. Protection has sometimes been another. I think David Diehl would be the first to tell you he hasn’t had the season he hoped. He missed some games due to injury and at other times hasn’t played to the high standard he sets for himself. It’s easy to say replace Diehl, but with whom? The only reserve tackle on the roster is James Brewer, who is not at Diehl’s level. Regarding Webster, he clearly had a rough day in Baltimore. But he has covered the opposition’s bets receiver for most of the season, and this was really the first time he was obviously singled out – so he must have done something right.

Now that the season is over, do you think the Giants should play some of their younger players like (David) Wilson, (Rueben) Randle and (Jayron) Hosley against the Eagles?
-Jerry

First of all, the season’s not over. Tom Coughlin has no patience for people with attitudes like your's. To him, every game is critically important and the regular-season against Philadelphia is no exception. It’s a division and it’s a chance to end the season on a high note after two ugly losses. And that doesn’t take into account the outside possibility the Giants have of making the playoffs. The Giants have been playing their young players. Wilson’s been an integral part of the offense the last three weeks (he started in Atlanta), Randle had a 43-yard catch in Baltimore and Hosley has started the last two games and six overall. But Coughlin’s won’t give them more playing time Sunday to get a better idea what he has for next year. His only concern is this season, and beating the Eagles.
