What does Coach Coughlin think of longer extra point?

Posted Aug 20, 2014

Coach Tom Coughlin shared his thoughts on the NFL's Preseason 33-yard PAT experiment

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. –
His kickers supported it, but Tom Coughlin is no fan of the NFL experiment that created the 33-yard extra point.

In the first two weeks of preseason (plus the Hall of fame Game, which the Giants played in), the line of scrimmage on extra point was moved back from the traditional 2-yard line to the 15.

Josh Brown, who likes longer extra point because of the excitement and intensity it brings to an otherwise routine play, made all six of his PATs in the Giants’ first three games. Brandon McManus succeeded on his only try.

>> COACH SET EXPECTATIONS FROM FRIDAY

League-wide, kickers made 120 of 126 extra point attempts (95.2%) from 33 yards.

The experiment has ended for this year; beginning this weekend, the ball will go back to the 2-yard line for PATs. Coughlin is a traditionalist and would be happy if he never again sees the ball spotted so far from the goal line for an extra point.

“I didn’t think much of it when it was suggested,” Coughlin said today. “There are some ways to change that part of it if the intent is to make it more exciting. I think that certainly would be one of them. I think you have to be aware of the fact that it’s a 33-yard field goal in November when the wind’s blowing and it’s snowing here and in Miami it’s 75 degrees. It’s a little different in different parts of the country. You do have to be aware of that. I would say probably the ball will stay at the two (for) extra points. But if you really want to make it interesting put it at the one.”

If that happened, more coaches would likely opt to go for two points instead of settling for the almost sure extra point. But that’s an experiment for another season.

>> 5 THINGS WE LEARNED AT PRACTICE

  • Safety Cooper Taylor, who injured his left sesamoid vs. the Colts, will need surgery. Coughlin said it is a “possibility” that Taylor will go in injured reserve.

  • Injured linebacker Jon Beason has ramped up his workouts as he continues to target opening night in Detroit (Sept. 8) as his return date.

“He’s done well,” Coughlin said. “He’s done everything they’ve asked him to do. The movement on the field and what he’s done on the field has been good.”

  • Coughlin said the starters will “25 to 30 snaps” in the Giants’ preseason game Friday night vs. the Jets. Left tackle Will Beatty and Trumaine McBride, who is expected to start at cornerback will get about 20 snaps apiece. They did not play in the first two games as precaution after they had offseason surgery and their workload continues to be monitored by the team’s medical staff.

  • After making two big catches on the game-winning drive last week in Indianapolis, tight end Adrien Robinson has, “certainly has given himself an opportunity to play a little bit more,” Coughlin said.

  • Players who did not practice today – and not expecting to face the Jets - include cornerbacks Prince Amukamara (groin) and Jayron Hosley (foot), wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) and Trindon Holliday (hamstring), offensive linemen Charles Brown (shoulder) and James Brewer (back), running back Peyton Hillis (ankle/foot) and tight end Xavier Grimble (hamstring).
