QB Ryan Nassib shines with 3 TD passes; postgame notes

Posted Aug 22, 2014

QB Ryan Nassib played the entire second half against the Jets and threw 3 touchdown passes

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Ryan Nassib threw some gorgeous passes Friday night, but his favorite play was the one that didn’t require him to lift his arm. As the final seconds came off the clock, Nassib twice took a knee as the Giants turned away the Jets, 35-24, in the MetLife Bowl.

“That’s the best play in football right there,” Nassib said. “That’s always a great feeling, to be able to kneel knowing you won it. That’s great.”

Nassib’s performance wasn’t bad, either. He entered the game at the start of the third quarter with the Giants trailing, 10-7. Nassib played the entire second half and completed eight of 12 passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns – three yards to Henry Hynoski, 39 yards to Preston Parker and 31 yards to Corey Washington, who scored for the fourth week in a row.

“He stuck the ball in there down the field well,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “He didn’t run the ball today; he didn’t come out of there running it, but he directed the running game into the right spots and that was a good thing as well.”

A week ago, Nassib’s standing as the Giants’ backup quarterback seemed tenuous. After Nassib played poorly and Curtis Painter completed all seven of his passes in a victory over a Pittsburgh, the two quarterbacks were flip-flopped in practice, with Nassib falling to No. 3.

He moved back to the second slot after hitting 11 of 15 throws and leading the Giants on two late touchdown drives in a comeback victory at Indianapolis. Friday night, he played well again.

“One thing that was very impressive was that he didn’t have a very good game two weeks ago and he came back last week and this week and played very well,” Coughlin said. “He ran the offense well.”

>> NASSIB AMONG 5 PLAYERS THAT STOOD OUT

“I’m just kind of doing what I’ve always done,” Nassib said. “You’re going to have good games, you’re going to have bad games. A lot of what has to do about this position is you have to have a short memory. We just went out, did what we always did, practiced hard, prepared hard. When you play as hard as you can, you prepare as hard as you can, more than likely good things will happen.

“The game’s starting to slow down. That just comes with reps in practice and being able to be in the system a little bit longer. But there’s still a lot left to get better at, there’s still a lot more to learn and I’ve got a lot more stuff to correct.”

  • Nassib said the touchdown to Parker was originally supposed to be a run.

“We had a run play called and they kind of loaded the box, we checked to a pass and had single coverage on the outside,” Nassib said. “Preston was able to wiggle free and make a great play.

“It’s just something that comes with the play. Pretty much every run has a pass option. Depending on a certain look, we might have to get to a pass. When they load the box like that, a lot of runs aren’t very good, so sometimes you have to air it out.”

  • Victor Cruz caught a nine-yard pass from Manning on the game’s first play, officially his first reception of the summer. Cruz finished with team-high totals of four receptions for 61 yards.

  • The Giants did not come out of the game unscathed. Left guard Geoff Schwartz was carted off the field with 5:54 remaining in the second quarter with a dislocated toe. “It’s pretty serious,” Coughlin said. “Hard to play with a toe that’s not functioning.”

Wide receiver Marcus Harris, who received some first-team snaps, left the game with a shoulder injury. Cornerback Zack Bowman was sidelined early with an injury to his triceps, and defensive tackle Marcus Kuhn exited with a lower leg issue.

  • Weston Richburg replaced Brandon Mosley at right guard in the first quarter and played for two series before Mosley returned with 6:01 remaining in the second. On the next play, Schwartz left the game and Richburg replaced him at left guard.

  • Defensive end Damontre Moore had two sacks and recovered a fumble.

  • Rookie linebacker Devon Kennard led the Giants with seven tackles (four solo).

  • Defensive tackle Mike Patterson had one tackle in his preseason debut.

  • David Wilson watched the game from the Giants’ bench area. The team’s 2012 first-round draft choice was forced to retire earlier this month because of continued concerns about his neck injuries.

  • The Giants’ game captains were Mark Herzlich, Jacquian Williams and John Conner (a former Jet).

  • Giants players not in uniform Friday were wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) and Trindon Holliday (hamstring), offensive linemen Charles Brown (shoulder) and James Brewer (back), cornerbacks Prince Amukamara (groin) and Jayron Hosley (foot), safety Cooper Taylor (foot), running back Peyton Hillis (ankle/foot), tight end Xavier Grimble (hamstring) and linebacker Jon Beason (foot/PUP).

  • The Giants now trail in the annual preseason series with the Jets, 24-21-1, with the tie coming in 1972.

  • The Giants will conclude their five-game preseason schedule Thursday at home against the New England Patriots. Coughlin said the starters will likely see some action in that game.

“I’ll think about that, but we don’t play until Monday night (the regular-season opener in Detroit on Sept. 8), so that’s quite a hike,” Coughlin said. “I would think that maybe we’ll play some snaps with the ones. We usually do that – one or two series.”
