Odell Beckham Jr. ruled out vs. Jets

Posted Aug 19, 2014

Coach Tom Coughlin announced Tuesday that Odell Beckham Jr. will not play Friday vs. the Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – It was no practice, but no setback today for Odell Beckham Jr. But the end result is there will be no preseason debut Friday night for the Giants’ first-round draft choice.

Beckham, the fleet wide receiver from LSU, was idle after returning to practice last week. He has missed much of training camp with a strained hamstring. Beckham had hoped to play in a preseason game for the first time against the Jets, but must now point to the finale a week from tomorrow vs. New England.

“I don’t think Beckham hurt himself,” coach Tom Coughlin said after practice. “He was sore this morning.”

Beckham remains confident he is not dealing with a long-term issue.

“We have progressively built up my workload,” Beckham said. “I was sore this morning, and I didn’t work today because we didn’t want a setback, and I don’t consider this a setback. I see it as another step in getting back to full strength.”

Coughlin said he didn’t notice Beckham had an issue near the end of the team’s workout yesterday.

“I didn’t even realize ... because one of the last plays of practice yesterday, he caught a pass and ran down the sideline and looked pretty darn good,” Coughlin said. “But he evidentially was sore this morning. They don’t feel like it’s a re-injury, but they’re going to continue to be cautious if that’s what it takes. They’re saying no setback. That’s kind of where we are on it.”

On Friday, Beckham will miss his fourth game. In a normal season, that is an entire preseason schedule. But the Giants are playing five games this month because of their participation in the Hall of Fame Game. Even if he makes it back for the Patriots game, Beckham has missed a lot of time on the field.

Coughlin is hopeful the talented rookie will quickly make up for lost time.

“He’s been in every meeting,” Coughlin said. “He knows the offense and he knows the terminology. The stamina, endurance part, all of those kinds of things are all going to have to be accomplished.”

In Beckham’s absence, several other receivers have stepped up and impressed, including Marcus Harris, Corey Washington, Travis Harvey and Preston Parker.

“I don’t like to look at it that way,” Harris said. “Hopefully, he (Beckham) gets out on the field soon, because we need him. He is our first-round draft pick. The opportunity for me to get plays? Yeah, but I don’t look at is as a positive with him being hurt and me getting plays. We’re hoping for a quick recovery and to get him back.”

Harris leads the Giants with eight receptions and is second with 90 yards in three games. A case can be made that his numbers wouldn’t be as impressive had Beckham been on the field, so Harris has taken advantage of an unexpected chance.

“It was definitely an opportunity,” Harris said. “A big opportunity. (There are) limited reps for a guy like me. I’ve earned the reps I got and I kept making plays, so they kept giving them to me. Hopefully, I keep it that way.”

Coughlin said he is open-minded regarding the possibility of keeping six wide receivers on the 53-man roster.

“If they’re evaluated as being solid people that can make the club, then perhaps you have to make an adjustment somewhere else,” Coughlin said. “Are we against keeping six? No. That’s been done before.”

  • Here’s how Coughlin responded to the now-daily question about the state of the Giants’ offense:

“We’re a work in progress, just like I say every week,” Coughlin said. “We’re a work in progress. Last week, obviously, in one regard was not very good, but on the other hand what the second and third group did when they went in the game was historic, to be honest with you (rebounding from a 26-0 fourth-quarter deficit to win, 27-26). The ones have got to get going on both sides of the ball.”

    >> OFFENSE KNOWS IT NEEDS WORK, NOT PANICKING

  • The Giants have always liked offensive linemen who can play multiple positions and today they had some players take snaps at different spots. Right tackle Justin Pugh took some reps on the left side and right guard Brandon Mosley was temporarily the right tackle.

“They’re all playing pretty much everywhere,” Coughlin said. “You always attempt to be creative, flexible. As many people as you can have to be centers, you never know about that either.”

Geoff Schwartz played right guard last season with Kansas City, but has lined up exclusively on the left side since joining the Giants.

“We would consider him to play any spot,” Coughlin said. “There are no restrictions on what a guy can do. The combinations haven’t reached out to that for him, but if he had to go over there and play over there, I’m sure he could.”
