8 things to watch for during Giants vs. Jets

Posted Aug 21, 2014

Giants.com highlights eight things to watch for as the Giants face the Jets on Friday night

1. Production from starters.
GIANTS VS. JETS

> Watch: Giants Meet the Media
After backups stole the show in the Giants’ first three preseason games -- which were all victories -- coach Tom Coughlin wants to see more from his first-teamers, offensively and defensively. “Based on last week, I would hope that there is significant production and better quality of play from our ones certainly,” Coughlin said.

2. Offensive line combinations.
From rookie second-round draft Choice Weston Richburg taking reps with the first unit to Justin Pugh seeing some time at left tackle, the Giants are looking at different combinations to come up with the best offensive line for Week 1, which is rapidly approaching.

3. Depth chart climbers.
Led by wide receiver and preseason hero Corey Washington, a group of players have earned more looks and have been bumped up in the pecking order heading into Friday night against the Jets. Also keep in mind that final 53-man rosters must be set on Aug. 30 while practice squads have been increased league-wide to 10 players, up from the previous maximum of eight.

4. Ryan Nassib making his case for No. 2 QB.
The second-year quarterback was bumped down to third in the quarterback rotation heading into last week’s game against the Colts but went on to complete 11-of-15 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown in Indianapolis. That included leading a nine-play, 86-yard drive to win the game, which had him back to practicing this week with the twos behind Eli Manning and ahead of Curtis Painter.

5. Starters to play “25 to 30” snaps.
Traditionally regarded as the NFL’s dress rehearsal, the third preseason game will see the Giants’ starters play 25 to 30 snaps, according to Coughlin. Will Beatty and cornerback Trumaine McBride, both of whom saw their first action last week, are being brought along cautiously after both underwent offseason surgeries and will play roughly 20 plays.

6. You likely won’t see…
WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring), CB Prince Amukamara (groin), OT Charles Brown (shoulder), CB Jayron Hosley (foot), WR Trindon Holliday (hamstring), OT James Brewer (back), RB Peyton Hillis (ankle/foot), and TE Xavier Grimble (hamstring).

7. Extra points return to normal.
The NFL’s experiment with longer extra points is over for the time being. For the first two weeks of the preseason (three for the Giants, who played an extra one because of the Hall of Fame Game), the ball was placed at the 15-yard line as opposed to the traditional 2. Now it’s back to its normal placement.

“I didn’t think much of it when it was suggested,” Coughlin said this week. “There are some ways to change that part of it if the intent is to make it more exciting. I think that certainly would be one of them. I think you have to be aware of the fact that it’s a 33-yard field goal in November when the wind’s blowing and it’s snowing here and in Miami it’s 75 degrees. It’s a little different in different parts of the country. You do have to be aware of that. I would say probably the ball will stay at the 2 (for) extra points. But if you really want to make it interesting put it at the one.”

8. The Snoopy Trophy is on the line.
The Giants and the New York Jets meet on Friday for the 46th consecutive preseason since the series began in 1969, with the Jets leading the series, 24-20-1. This week’s Giants-Jets game is the fourth annual MetLife Bowl, which the Giants lost last season in overtime, 24-21. The MetLife Bowl refers to the annual preseason game between the two New York franchises, with both teams battling for the Snoopy Trophy. Snoopy is the brand icon for MetLife, the New York City-based insurance company.
