Dave Gettleman, the Carolina Panthers’ general manager who previously worked for 15 years in the Giants’ player personnel department, confirmed the round today at his season-ending news conference in Charlotte.

Beason was acquired by the Giants on Oct. 4. He quickly stepped in at middle linebacker and became a leader on a defense that improved from a No. 26 ranking in the NFL shortly before his arrival to No. 8 at season’s end. Despite not playing on defense for the Giants in the first five games, Beason finished second on the team to Antrel Rolle with 93 tackles (66 solo).

The Giants own the 12th overall selection in the first round of the 2014 draft, which will begin on May 8. They could recoup a seventh-round selection when the NFL announces in March which teams will receive compensatory draft choices.
